Prepare the wall

discover our practical tips to successfully install shelves in your home thanks to this easy-to-follow guide.

Before starting to install your shelves, it is crucial to properly prepare the wall on which they will be mounted. This first step ensures optimal strength and durability.
First of all, check that the wall is not crossed by any electrical conduit or water pipe. Knowing the internal layout of your home will make this task easier.
Next, make sure the wall is straight and free of holes or significant imperfections. If necessary, fill the holes, quickly sand the surface, then apply a coat of paint for a clean and tidy result.

Mark the reference points

Once the wall is ready, it’s time to make your markings. For better visualization, place your shelf directly against the wall. Ask a friend for help if needed to hold the shelf.
When you have determined the ideal location, draw a line under the shelf. Whatever fixing system is used, make sure your line is perfectly straight by using a spirit level.

Installation with brackets

Brackets are very practical tools for a successful installation. Choose brackets suitable for the size of your shelf and capable of supporting the weight of the objects you want to place on it.
Here is how to proceed:

  • Position a bracket every sixty centimeters, ten centimeters from the edges of the shelf.
  • Drill pilot holes, then place your brackets.
  • Drill the wall fully and insert anchors.
  • Screw in your brackets and finally, fix the shelf.

Installation with battens

For those with two adjacent walls, battens are an excellent alternative. This method is perfect for installations in niches, particularly in bathrooms or kitchens.
The installation of battens is done as follows:

  • Make pilot holes about three centimeters from the edges of the battens and every fifty centimeters between each hole.
  • Drill the wall and position the anchors.
  • Use relatively long screws, at least 2.5 centimeters longer than the thickness of the battens.
  • Screw in the battens, then install and fix your shelves.

Choosing the appropriate screws

The type of screw to use depends on the composition of your wall. Here are some practical tips:
To determine the type of wall:

  • Tap on the wall and listen to the sound:
  • If the sound is clear, the wall is probably made of plasterboard or brick.
  • If the sound is muffled, it is a masonry wall.
