Choose and use topsoil for your garden

In gardening, choosing the right soil is essential to ensure healthy plant growth. By understanding the differences between topsoil, commonly referred to as garden soil, and other types of soil, you can select the one that best suits your needs.

What is topsoil?

Topsoil is the source of garden soil, which is the natural soil found in gardens. However, since 2002, the definition of garden soil has been subject to management and regulation. AFNOR defines it as follows: topsoil originates from a superficial or deep humiferous soil that may be mixed with organic matter of plant origin, organic amendments, and/or mineral substances. The topsoil available on the market, which we commonly call garden soil, may contain additives and organic substances added to modify its composition.

  • Clayey
  • Sandy
  • Limestone
  • Rich in humus
  • Silty

Where to find topsoil?

If you are looking to buy topsoil, you will find many ads from individuals selling or giving away topsoil after construction projects. Please note that this does not refer to standardized arable land but rather to fertile soil suitable for cultivation. It is also worth noting that topsoil sold by individuals may not have been screened, making its distribution more challenging.

Potting soil: enriched topsoil

Potting soil and topsoil are both highly valued for planting and growing crops. The difference between potting soil and topsoil lies in its richness in decomposition products. In this respect, potting soil must be porous to allow air and water circulation. However, potting soil is artificially obtained by mixing various organic and mineral materials together. In contrast, topsoil occurs naturally as it is found in nature itself. Topsoil can be mixed with organic matter of plant origin as well as with organic amendments and mineral substances.

Price of topsoil

Generally, the price of topsoil does not depend on the type of soil chosen, but rather on the quantity and quality of the soil itself.

  • Small quantities: If you need a small amount of topsoil, you can buy bags weighing 25 to 40 kg.
  • Price: Generally, the price of bagged topsoil varies from 5 to 25 euros for a 40 kg bag, which equates to 0.15 to 0.60 euros per kilogram.

How to use topsoil for your garden?

Once you have chosen the right topsoil, it is essential to understand how to use it properly to maximize results in your garden:

  1. Determine if your current soil needs improvement. Topsoil could be mixed with potting soil and organic substances to enhance the quality of the existing soil.
  2. Assess your needs based on each type of plant. Some plants may prefer a more silty or clayey soil, while others may thrive in humiferous soil. Adapting the composition of your soil accordingly will be beneficial for the optimal growth of your crops.
  3. Regularly add organic matter to maintain the fertility and microbial life of your soil.

Choosing the best topsoil for your garden depends on many factors, including the type of plants you wish to grow, the quality of your existing soil, and your maintenance preferences. By taking the time to understand the different options and their advantages, you will increase your chances of success in your garden.
