Build a refuge for red squirrels: how to create a hut in your garden

Temps de lecture : 2 min

Did you know ? Red squirrels, a protected mammal species in Europe, can find refuge in trees if you build a small shelter for them. By building a shelter for these shy and endearing animals, you contribute to their protection and the preservation of their environment.

Focus on the red squirrel : in the heart of the woods

These graceful mammals are considered rodents, generally living in nests they build themselves with plant materials. Red squirrels particularly enjoy oaks, spruces, birches, and beeches. They tend to store their food in their shelters for the winter.

  • They have two litters a year
  • Help in the regrowth of trees by burying forgotten seeds
  • Generally active even during winter

Building a squirrel shelter : essential steps

To create a welcoming space for our squirrel friends, follow this step-by-step guide :

Choosing the tree

Opt for a wide tree so the squirrel can easily climb up and down. Keep in mind that their nests usually reach 50 centimeters in diameter and are placed about ten meters high.

Assembling the boards

Cut the wood panels according to the recommended dimensions for a comfortable shelter : two square panels of 25 cm for the sides, and 45 cm panels for the bottom and front. Also, remember to leave a circular opening of about 10 cm in diameter in the front part, which will serve as the entrance to the shelter.

Constructing the roof

Cover the shelter with a slanted roof to prevent water and snow from accumulating. Use nails or special glue to fix the panels together, without risking injury to the squirrels.

Installing it in the tree

Securely attach the shelter to a sturdy trunk or branch, oriented to protect the inhabitants from strong winds and rain. Then place a feeder nearby to attract them to their new home.

Tips to make this shelter inviting

  • Maintain the natural color of the wood: red squirrels are particularly sensitive to the smell of wood, and paint could repel them.
  • Use natural materials: build the shelter using untreated wood panels and avoid nails or screws that could injure the animals. Preferably use special glue instead.

Be attentive to their environment

To encourage squirrels to settle in your shelter, ensure that your garden provides a conducive environment for their comfort and safety.

  • Provide fresh and clean water sources nearby
  • Offer them different types of food: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and even some vegetables
  • avoid using chemical products for treating your plants and trees

By following these practical tips, you will contribute to the protection of red squirrels and the preservation of their natural habitat. If you are a nature and gardening lover, attracting these friendly rodents to your green space is also beneficial for the growth of new trees thanks to their feeding habits.
